my goal in one-on-one portrait sessions is often to ease people out of their comfort zones, into a place where they no longer worry about the camera or how they look. sometimes this process can stretch my subjects’ limits and they see a part of themselves in a way they never thought possible before. through this experience i’ve had people tell me that for the first time they saw themselves as beautiful, strong, even sexy. those who go through this process often feel richer for having pushed their limits, and for seeing themselves through to the other side.
however, every once in awhile the tables are turned, and it is i who ends up learning something new. enter Wyatt– an incredibly thoughtful, decisive, witty, extraordinary, and theatrical force of soul whose unique and particular vision for his portraits allowed me to break my own habits, and ended up pushing me into creating imagery that i have truly come to love.
i don’t want to spoil anything by explaining my processes, or declaring why i may have shot this image that way, or that one another. what i will say is that in many ways i grew as a photographer and an artist because of this shoot. Wyatt, like many whom i admire, is someone who knew exactly who he was and exactly what he wanted… and while it may have challenged and pushed me, i find myself on the other side grateful that we were able to create all of this together.
